Chinese Education System !
I was once part of a school based on the Chinese education system. I found it annoying because the teachers always think whatever comes out of their mouths is the principle! The teachers like to make students suffer with tons of homework. Why does a Chinese teenager in high school literally spend 10 hours or even more doing homework and studying a day??! Well, it’s because the Chinese education system is insane!
It seems to me that, one of the biggest problems of the Chinese education system is that students are expected to absorb what they are taught in class and memorize massive amounts of information in their spare time because they need to be well prepared for GaoKao. In my experience, with so much homework, students won’t get enough sleep and won’t have energy to go to school in the morning and it makes their grades worse. If I am still studying (memorizing!!) in that kind of environment, I might have a mental break down.
From my point of view, the ZhongKao in China is also ridiculous. It’s an entrance test to get into high school. You have to be tested on every subject including PE. In order for the students to get a good mark on PE (so the school will have a good reputation), students need to train at least one hour a day. It includes running laps and doing push-ups. Many students go to the hospital because they faint or get injured during the training, one of the students even die in the training. From what I know, the purpose of PE should be helping the students develop good exercise habits, have a healthier lifestyle and prevent illness. But the PE class in China is just torturing people. Currently, I am studying in a school not based on Chinese education system. Compared to the awful training I had before, the PE class in this school is like heaven. I only need to run 2 laps ever class.
GaoKao (China’s college entrance exam) is very ineffective because it is just testing memorization but not learning. That means the students the students in China spend 3 years memorizing information. It does not help their creativity or problem solving skills. Which are the most important things in the society. Also, GaoKao is extremely unhealthy for individuals and society. I’ve seen stories on the newspaper saying some parents were poisoning frogs to prevent the animals’ croaks from disturbing their child’s study and neighbours were asked not to flush toilets during student’s study hours. Unbelievably, a child found out that her father’s death had been kept from her for 2 months because her mother didn’t want her to fail the test. In my opinion, GaoKao is just a test that will make your life a tragedy.
So, the Chinese education system is a disaster. Chinese students only focus on memorizing exactly what is being told by the teacher and be able to spit it back out word for word and this is absolutely crazy! The lack of asking questions and teaching students to think outside the box and think for themselves is the major issue now. But! Will the Chinese government change anything about it? I don’t think so!
