Social media access In China !
The rant that I’m writing today is about social media access in China. I was living in Hong Kong a few years ago, and I was able to browse through any website I wanted to, but then I moved to China. There is one thing that really bothers me, I can’t go on to the websites that I used to browse through a lot! For example: Facebook, Youtube, and a lot of websites that shows up in Google. By the way, the news on the internet and television are also blocked, not all of them are shown.
I think everyone should be able to access Youtube, it is very important that people have the freedom to see videos that they want to. There are websites that are similar to Youtube that you could go on in China too, but it still makes me feel uncomfortable because it is being that you are controlled. I think that Youtube is one of the websites that has the most videos. Almost everyone around the world uses it, there are news, funny clips and other videos that people upload from lots of different places, I can also stay in touch with pop culture by browsing Youtube, but the websites in China does not have all of the things that I have mentioned, so I wish that I could go on Youtube in China. I believe that the Chinese government banned Youtube because they don’t want people in China to know things that are going on out there in the world that would make them angry or things that they might want to protest about. It will be easier to get everybody in China in line this way.
I’m angry because Facebook is also has been blocked too! Like Youtube, Facebook is also a website that a lot of people from different places uses every day, there are actually only four out of almost two hundred countries in the world that blocks Facebook. People share their happiness, sadness, what they have been doing lately, or other things in this website by photos, text, or other ways. Facebook is an important plat form for people to communicate with each other, but China blocked this website as well. I think it’s the reason is the same as why they blocked Youtube, to keep them in control.
I also think that blocking information is also blocking people from learning. Most of the time when I have to look up things on the internet so that I could get my homework done, the websites that I open are banned. I have to go through a lot of website to find one that is not banned. It is really annoying!!
I think China should change its policy because it is hiding things from people that lives in this country, which obviously will care about this country. There must be something wrong with the Chinese government because most governments does not do this, I the Chinese government should work this out somehow and give people in China more freedom.
