The danger of technology !
People do not understand technology enough. We human beings are overusing technology, and not using them astutely. Technology should be the invention or creation of something that is developed from scientific knowledge. It is supposed to be a tool to help our daily lives become more convenient. The definition hasn’t changed, however, the effect on us has. It’s like they can’t live without touching or having their devices by their sides. I feel like saying to them “wouldn’t it be great if your device had one more function- talking. Then instead of a friend you have your tech-friend who will always care about you! Yay.” Our daily lives might have become easier to go through but people are getting so obsessed with it and not noticing the danger of it. “Men have become the tools of their tools”, well said, Henry David Thoreau!!!
I myself, use technology a lot in my daily tasks. I need my phone to call people, my laptop to do homework, and internet to search information. This is basically how everyone should be using technology cleverly. Well, is that how you people are actually using it?! NO. Maybe an elephant can handle technology better than you. I’ve seen many people depend on their phones or iPods for many unnecessary things. For example, when people meet challenges, all they do is search answers online when they can solve it with pen and paper. See. If an elephant has been taught to use a computer, I’m pretty sure they can do that. I’ve seen a friend that has played online games for over 8 hours without sleeping or doing anything else. It’s unbelievably ridiculous how peoples’ minds can be controlled by addiction to games. I’ve seen another friend that has actually went through typing a long algebra math question on Google when he could have did it himself. (Yes. He went and searched for all the symbols he had to use. Smart right?) That is just silly and illogical. First of all, it is intolerable that people find answers for their homework online, by just typing in the question and plagiarizing the whole answer. Initially, plagiarism is unacceptable. Moreover, if they went through all that trouble to find the answer, why not try figuring it out? It would have taken the same amount of time and effort to do that. It’s totally agreeable that they might as well carry their devices to shower and shower with them.
That brings me to a question. I’m wonder what people will do if technology dies out. What other things can occupy their minds? Would they feel lonely and empty? I just hope that the rate of autism or depression won’t increase because of this. People say that if you lose something that you spend a lot your time on, you’d go crazy. For instance, a guy can do really stupid things after losing his girlfriend, of course, vice versa. In that case it can sometimes turn out to the guy doing stupid things like committing suicide, attempting to injure or even kill people associated with his girlfriend. With cases like that, it worries me what people would do in the circumstance of not having technology at all. I want to imagine that these enthusiasts won’t go maniac and destroy their life; but it’s not easy to believe that.
Next, I find it bothersome that the face-to-face talks are becoming fewer because they find playing with their devices more “interesting and entertaining”. I have had several experiences on competing with my friend’s phone to fight for her attention. Guess what? I lost every single time. Can you BELIEVE that?!She would rather text or play apps than having a conversation with me! I find this a common and serious problem between people of all ages. Even adults that are forty years old can be infatuated with their devices. My aunt, for example, loves to play with apps on her phone like Subway Surfer. Once, she was so intrigued in the game that she didn’t notice my niece crying. At the end, it was me who had to deal with my niece because my aunt was so into the game. To that, may I add, I had to make my niece to crying and it took me a whole hour! Isn’t it pathetic that a sixteen year old girl has to do everything because the forty year old adult won’t act her age?! I did learn one thing though - people could be so manipulated by technology. Also, how technology can weigh more than my importance in people’s eyes. It’s not only sad but also FRUSTRATING!
I have another pet peeve. I really don’t understand why people have to blog every single thing they do or see. I have a habit of taking pictures and posting them online. However, when I see pictures on blogs, this is what I see: a cup of Starbucks coffee, a school uniform, a pair of new shoes etc. Is it really a big deal that you have a scratch on your nail? The answer for me is NO, yet many people post the most insignificant problems like that on their blogs. So they’re saying that blogging online is ten thousand times better than having actual people listening to you? Soon, I came up with a conclusion. When people have showed their feelings on blogs, they receive much much more attention than saying it in real life. They see these pretty comments: ”Oh my god. Those shoes look so pretty!!!! Where’d you get them? I’d love to have a pair”, “ Really? You’re at Starbucks? Wow, that’s so cool.” or “Aw, I know how you feel. But the pain will end soon. It’s just a mater of time but every wound heals.” People hardly give such passionate comments when you talk to them in their face. However, that's the reality. Not everyone cares about what you do or how you feel; sometimes you just need to endure or feel your emotions alone. People. Take some time and think of how ancient people dealt with their problems? Well, I’m quite sure they didn’t tweet “I’m sad.” They had no other choice but tell their friends by mouth. Unfortunately, people are unable to do that now. They rely on these encouraging comments. I’m afraid that this will soon cause us to be reliant on people’s comments on whatever we do and not realizing that our problem is actually so minor that we could’ve dealt with it independently. You see @megan19990527; you new blue crystal nails means nothing to us.
It worries me that if we are so engaged by technology, what will happen to our relationships that need our full attention and effort to maintain? We most often hear guys imitating girls saying “you never show that you love me, all you do is sit there and play video games.” However, isn’t everyone like that now? I’m too busy watching videos on my phone; I don’t have time to study for the exam tomorrow. I’m nearly on the next level of this game, who cares about my mom’s birthday? People won’t notice me texting under the table on my best friend’s wedding right? The time and place does not matter to the people who are infatuated in their devices, their lust has covered their awareness. What happens after that? Friendships are broken, family relationships are dimmed and suddenly you’re left with you and your device.
I know that eight years ago, less than twenty percent of the world’s population had internet access. Now, nearly thirty nine percent of the world’s population has internet access. The more people using it, the more power we’re giving it. Internet can be used in a negative way such as net crimes. Net crimes are offenses against an individual or a group to harm or to gain benefit from them directly or indirectly using modern networks like the internet and mobile phones. Hackers can attack your device and take personal information then have easy access to your bank accounts and withdraw money out of it. Although many countries have crime bureaus, it is impossible to defend everyone’s device from hackers. Hackers can be so professional that they figure out your passwords in seconds when they use their techniques. Internet is a dangerous network that we should all be careful with while using. It was created to be used in a positive way but certain people can utilize it and commit crimes.
That’s why I think that we should set a limit for ourselves, as it is impossible to have zero access to technology. We should have plans for the time we spend on our devices and the time we spend with our family and friends. As each individual is different and unique, we should set our own limits. For example, every hour I spend on my devices, I need to spend thrice as much with my family, and double as much with my friends. Then, you have more communication face to face and your emotions can be properly expressed. Then, you can learn the actual response from the people who care about you and find solutions or just simply enjoy the time you have with them for life is short.
In conclusion, technology is widely popular throughout the world but should be used smartly. It’s not that we should eliminate it and it’s impossible to as many of us can agree to this quote “I do not fear technology, I fear the lack of them.” – Isaac Asimov. I truly hope that we would realize the effect it has on us and turn it into a positive impact. I hope that we can restore our control over them and not vice versa. Make technology a tool and have technology in our full control.
